Conference – 15 December: Border Detention in a Continuously Changing Legal Framework

On 15 December 2025, at Cre.Zi. Plus in Palermo (Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa, via Paolo Gili 4), the associations ASGI, CLEDU, and Spazi Circolari will organise a training and discussion day dedicated to the evolution of border detention.

The day will provide an updated overview of the ongoing changes in the border procedures and detention system, in a context marked by experimental practices, frequent legislative interventions, and upcoming changes related to the European reform of asylum law.

The programme will cover the case of centres in Albania, current practices adopted in Sicilian hotspots, the role of defence lawyers, and jurisprudential developments, as well as constitutional issues and the limits imposed by EU law to protect personal freedom.

The day will feature interventions from sector experts and collective discussion sessions, aiming to reflect on the role of detention and share analytical tools, emerging critical issues, and possible future scenarios useful for those working in the protection of rights at the border.

Participation is free, with registration required, in person only, via form by 10 December.

The Palermo Bar Association (COA) has recognised a total of 3 credits: 1 in immigration law, 1 in constitutional law, and 1 in European Union law, for in-person participation in the event.

The event will also be broadcast on YouTube at this link: https://www.youtube.com/live/ArhpzqHoKMI?feature=share
